One of the worse things that could happen to your home is a fire outbreak. Your home is supposed to be the one place where you should feel safe the most. As they say, there is no place like home. When you take a look inside your house that you grew up in, every part of it brings to mind happy memories. Losing it would have been a great tragedy. The best thing to do is to have a fire risk assessment done in your place so that the necessary fire preventive and safety measures are in place. Of course, fire safety accidents do happen but we can do something to make sure that the possibility of it would be reduced or avoided.

There are things that we often take for granted at home that we may not realize would be a contributing factor to fire safety accidents. Take a good look at your house and check what needs to be repaired or replaced like broken appliances or rotten wood. Have your electrical wirings checked by a professional. See if you have stuff, lying around that should be thrown already or should be stored properly. Make sure that you read warning labels on products that you bought on how to properly store or dispose of it. Before sleeping or leaving the house, make sure that you check that all lights and appliances are turned off. When you smell something burning, check it out. Look for the source. Scented candles are well and good, but you should not leave it burning unattended like when you are about to fall asleep.

Fire safety in the kitchen is something that you should not take for granted. There is always the danger of fire when you are cooking. Do not leave the fire burning even when you just have to answer a phone call, check who is knocking on your door, or when you have to go to the toilet. Turn the fire off first then do what you have to do. You never know you just might forget that you are cooking until you see smoke or smell something burning. It would be practical if you bought one or two fire blankets and have it within reach but far from where a fire might start.

It would be good if you have smoke and fire detectors installed in every room of your house. These would definitely help in alerting you of the danger. However, make sure that you replace the batteries regularly and that they are working properly. Fire extinguishers are also good to have around. It would be your best defense against incipient fires. You could prevent a fire from spreading or even put it out. It would also help you in case your way out is blocked by fire. Safety accidents can also happen when you use the wrong fire extinguisher to contain a particular fire or use a fire extinguisher past its expiry date. It is important that you check the condition of the extinguisher as well as its expiration date. You need to know when it is time to have it replaced or refilled.
